Heavy Duty Gas Cylinder Replacement for Herman Miller Aeron and Other Office Chairs by OfficeLogixShop
Upgrade your office chair's stability and comfort with our heavy-duty replacement gas cylinder. Designed for busy environments and extended service life, it is built to maintain reliable height support where standard cylinders might fail. It is rated to support up to 450 lbs, a robust solution for your ergonomic seating, and as an Aeron gas cylinder replacement it fits both the Aeron Classic and the Aeron Remastered.
Built to Last: A heavy-duty upgrade that restores smooth lift and unwavering stability to your workstation!
Fits
- Herman Miller Aeron Classic and Aeron Remastered with a top-activated cylinder (other kinds: see the type check further down the page)
- Most standard office chair bases and mechanisms that use a standard replacement cylinder
Look elsewhere for
- Counter or drafting height: our Aeron stool cylinder
- Herman Miller Mirra 1: our cable-actuated Mirra 1 cylinder
- Herman Miller Embody: our cable-actuated Embody gas cylinder
Why Upgrade to Heavy Duty?
The gas cylinder is the post under the seat that holds the height you set; you may also hear it called the gas lift, the pneumatic cylinder, the piston or the hydraulic. Standard cylinders can eventually lose pressure or wobble. Our heavy-duty unit is specifically engineered for higher weight capacity and durability. It ensures your chair maintains its height setting without sinking, offering consistent performance for office, executive and computer chairs.

How to Remove the Old Cylinder and Install the New One
- Lay the chair on its side and twist the old cylinder loose from the seat mechanism with a pipe wrench (our video takes the seat off first for more room).
- Turn the base over and knock the old cylinder out of it with a rubber mallet.
- Push the new cylinder into the base and set the chair back on top. No tools are needed to install the new one.
- If the chair sinks after installation, remove the mechanism cover and use a hex key to adjust the bolt or pin that presses the cylinder button, loosening or tightening it a quarter turn at a time.
Enjoy a steadier seat with smooth height control by upgrading to a heavy-duty gas cylinder built for comfort and reliability.

Gas Cylinder Replacement, Step by Step on Video
Written steps with photos: our Aeron top-activated cylinder replacement guide.
Cylinder, Pin or Height Cable: What Makes Your Chair Sink
Three parts can make a chair lose its height. A few minutes of checking shows which one you need, so you only buy the part that fixes it.
The seat sinks, drops when you sit, or creeps up
Check the pin first. Under the mechanism cover, a bolt or pin presses the button on top of the cylinder, and if it presses too hard or not enough, the chair behaves just like a failed cylinder. The quick-fix video above shows the adjustment. If the seat still sinks once the pin is set right, the cylinder is losing pressure and can no longer hold your weight. You do not need to buy a new chair: a brand-new, high-quality cylinder is the fix.
The height lever feels loose or does nothing
On an Aeron Classic, the cable or knob between the lever and the cylinder has likely failed, not the cylinder itself. Our height cable and knob kit replaces that link.
Top, side or cable activated?
With the mechanism cover off, look at the top of your cylinder. A small button in the center, pressed from above, means it is a top-activated cylinder, the type this one replaces. If your Aeron has a side-activated cylinder, the parts and the procedure are different, so this is not the right part. An older Aeron Classic with a cable-activated cylinder can switch to this one when you fit it together with the height cable and knob kit.
Cylinders for other chairs: the Steelcase Leap (side activated or top activated), the Steelcase Amia and the Steelcase Gesture.
Heavy Duty Gas Cylinder: Questions Before You Buy
Is this an OEM Herman Miller cylinder?
No. It is our own heavy-duty cylinder, designed and made by OfficeLogixShop, and it is covered by our warranty rather than Herman Miller's.
Does it fit the Aeron Remastered as well as the Classic?
Yes. One cylinder covers either chair, the Classic or the Remastered.
Does it fit the Herman Miller Embody?
No. The Embody's height cable clips onto the top of its cylinder, and this top-activated cylinder has no fitting for that cable. For an Embody, order our Embody gas cylinder; the same cable-actuated part is sold for the Mirra 1 as our Mirra 1 gas cylinder.
Are office chair gas cylinders universal?
Many are interchangeable, but not all. Most office chair bases take a standard replacement cylinder, yet the length, the stroke and the way the cylinder is triggered vary from chair to chair. Measure your old one against ours: 15.5 inches fully extended, an 8.5-inch body 2 inches in diameter, 5 inches of travel and a shaft 1.1 inches in diameter. A gaming chair that takes a standard replacement cylinder takes this one the same way an office chair does.
Can this cylinder raise my chair to counter height?
No. It is a desk-height cylinder with a 5-inch stroke. For an Aeron at counter or drafting height, use our Aeron stool cylinder instead.
What if the old cylinder won't come out?
A cylinder that has sat in a chair for years can be stuck tight, so expect to use some force. A longer pipe wrench gives you more turning force to twist it loose from the seat mechanism, and a few firm blows with a rubber mallet free it from the base. If it still will not budge, our team can take it out for you at the showroom described below.
