Gas Cylinder Replacement for Herman Miller Embody Chairs by OfficeLogixShop
When an Embody sinks while you sit or will not hold the height you set, a new Embody gas cylinder brings it back, and you do not need a new chair. This is the cable-actuated type the Embody takes.
Important Disclaimer: In rare cases, the cylinder you receive may have a slightly different outer base casing than your original OEM cylinder. This does not affect performance. If this happens, please watch our tutorial video below to see how to easily swap your old cylinder case onto the new cylinder.
Fits
- Herman Miller Embody chairs with the standard seat-height range (16" to 20½")
- The Herman Miller x Logitech G Embody gaming chair
Look elsewhere for
- Keeping a low (15" to 19") or extended (17" to 22") seat range: this cylinder gives the standard range
- Aeron and other office chairs with a top-activated cylinder: our heavy-duty gas cylinder
Why the Embody Takes a Cable-Actuated Cylinder
Most office chairs use a top-activated cylinder with a button that the seat mechanism presses down. The Embody's height control works through a cable instead: its ball end sits in the top of the cylinder, held by a cable collar, as Herman Miller's own Embody cylinder sheet shows. The same part also fits the Mirra 1, where you will find it as our Mirra 1 gas cylinder.

How to Replace the Gas Cylinder on an Embody
Herman Miller's Embody cylinder replacement sheet calls for a 2-pound hammer, a flat screwdriver, a white nylon cap and a lift-off tool; tools are not included with the cylinder. If you do not have them, the showroom box further down has the other way. The job in six steps:
- Raise the seat all the way up, then lay the chair on its back.
- Pry the cable collar up off the top of the cylinder with the flat screwdriver, then push the cable forward to free its ball end.
- Place the white nylon cap over the bottom of the cylinder and strike it with the 2-pound hammer until the base comes loose, then take the base off.
- Strap the lift-off tool onto the end of the cylinder that meets the seat mechanism, then strike the tool with the hammer until the cylinder separates from it.
- Seat the new cylinder in the mechanism, slide the base onto it, then reconnect the cable at the top, ball end first, and snap it back into place.
- Stand the chair up and sit down firmly a few times to set the cylinder.

Cylinder or Cable: Why an Embody Will Not Hold Its Height
A sinking seat and a height paddle that does nothing point to different parts. A quick look tells you which one your chair needs before you order.
The seat sinks while you sit
That is the usual sign of a worn cylinder: gas is leaking out of it, so it gives way under your weight. A new cylinder fixes it, and this is the part.
The height paddle does nothing
Check the cable first. If it has come off the top of the cylinder, the paddle has nothing to work, and clipping it back on may be all the chair needs.
Gas Cylinder for the Embody: Your Questions
Does it fit the Logitech G gaming Embody?
Yes. The gaming Embody keeps the standard Embody's seat-height range, and the changes Herman Miller lists for it are in the seat foam. This cylinder fits both.
Is this the tall Embody cylinder?
No. It gives Herman Miller's standard Embody seat height of 16 to 20½ inches. An Embody built with the extended range, 17 to 22 inches, uses a taller cylinder than this one.
Can I use a standard office chair cylinder instead?
No. A standard cylinder has no fitting for the Embody's height cable, so the paddle would have nothing to work. For an Aeron or another office chair with a top-activated cylinder, our heavy-duty gas cylinder is the one to get.
Is it the same cylinder as your Mirra 1 one?
Yes. It is the same part, listed here for Embody owners. If you have a Mirra 1, order it as our Mirra 1 gas cylinder.
Is this an OEM Herman Miller cylinder?
No. OfficeLogixShop designs and manufactures this replacement cylinder.
