What's included: the Back Mesh Fabric Only. It does not include the back frame or screws. You will reuse your existing frame and hardware.
No pre-drilled holes: our mesh ships without pre-drilled holes to ensure maximum tension. You will create the holes during installation for a custom fit. You will need a power drill to create the mounting holes during installation.
Holes already punched: if your mesh arrives with a few pre-drilled holes, please disregard them. You must create new holes aligned with your specific frame to ensure a tight fit.
Installing it: due to the mesh's tension, installation may require some pressure. Having a second person help is highly recommended. Reuse your existing frame screws as hardware is not included.
Watch the installation video below before you start. The steps are the same on the Remastered.
Is This Aeron Remastered Back Mesh Compatible With Your Chair?
Yes, if your chair is an Aeron Remastered: the mesh is designed to fit Size B and Size C frames perfectly. It won't fit a Classic. Three quick checks before you purchase:
How to Tell a Remastered From an Aeron Classic
The Aeron first came out in 1994, and Herman Miller reworked it in 2016 as the Remastered (V2). Here's the difference in the features that matter for this repair:
- The mesh. The Remastered uses 8Z Pellicle mesh, with eight zones of different tension, four of them in the back, for better weight distribution. The Classic's Pellicle has one tension all the way across.
- The lumbar support. A Remastered has PostureFit SL, which supports the sacrum as well as the lower back, or a lumbar pad. A Classic has the earlier PostureFit or a lumbar pad.
- The arms. Herman Miller redesigned the Remastered arms with more range of movement.
If you're still unsure which one you have, contact us first.
Size B or Size C? Count the Dots
There are three Aeron sizes (A, B and C) to suit different body types. To find yours, turn the chair around and run a finger under the rim at the top of the back. Two raised dots: Size B. Three: Size C. We only make this mesh in those two, and each one is cut for its own frame, so match it to your chair.
Pick the Color Your Chair Has
Go with the color your seat has now, and the back and seat will still look like a set. The table above lists all three Remastered colors by their code, so you can match yours exactly.
It Also Fits the Aeron Remastered Stool
Owners of the Aeron Remastered drafting stool can use this mesh too. Count the dots on the stool's back and pick that size.
When Should You Replace Your Aeron Back Mesh?
Replace it once the back stops holding you the way it used to. Even the advanced 8Z Pellicle mesh on a Remastered can eventually lose tension or get damaged, and the signs are easy to spot:
- A tear or a hole. Pets, accidents and plain daily use all cause them.
- Fraying along the edge, or mesh starting to pull away from the frame.
- Slack. You lean back and feel the curve of the frame where a firm, even back should be.
- Your lower back feels unsupported, even with the lumbar right where you like it.
How to Install Aeron Remastered Back Mesh
The short version: take the back off the chair, swap the mesh on its frame, then bolt the back on again. The video shows every step, and the full list of what you'll need and what to do is right under it.
What You'll Need
- A power drill for the screw holes you'll make in the mesh.
- A screwdriver to take out and refit the frame screws. You reuse them.
- A towel. Lay it on the floor or a table first; it'll protect the plastic frame from scratches.
The Steps
- Check your size dots and color before you start.
- Unbolt the back from the chair frame and lay it on the towel.
- Undo the screws that hold the mesh to the frame, set them aside for later, and peel the old mesh off.
- Line up the mesh's center notch with the top center of the frame and fix it there. Then do the same at the bottom.
- Drill and fix the middle screws.
- Now the hard part. Pull one side tight, drill the next hole and screw it down, then keep going out toward the corners.
- Bolt the back on, put the lumbar support back if it came off, and sit down in your usual posture to test the tension.
The real challenge is the pull. Replacing the back mesh on an Aeron takes a little knowledge of how the Pellicle mesh system works. The mesh only supports you when it's stretched tight across the frame, so it has to go on under tension, and that takes some effort. Follow the video instructions and go slowly on the sides.
Prefer Someone Else Does It?
There are two ways to get this mesh. Order it here and we ship it free anywhere in the lower 48 states, or stop by our showroom at 683 Carle Ave, Lewis Center, Ohio, on the north side of the Columbus area. Bring the chair, or only the back, and our technicians will stretch and fit the mesh for you. No appointment needed, though a quick call means we'll have your size and color waiting.
Back Mesh Replacement or Full Back Frame Replacement: Which Does Your Aeron Need?
Most torn backs only need new mesh, and that's the smart, cost-effective way to restore your chair's performance without buying a completely new backrest assembly. Plenty of owners assume the only fix is a complete new backrest, which can cost hundreds of dollars.
| Compare | This back mesh | Our back frame with new mesh |
|---|---|---|
| Price | From $95 | $250 (sold out right now) |
| Your frame | Kept | Swapped for a refurbished genuine Remastered frame |
| The work | Drill, stretch and screw it on yourself | Bolt on with your 4 bolts |
In practice there are three routes: a complete back assembly (frame and mesh together, OEM or refurbished), an aftermarket mesh-only replacement like this one, or a used back from another chair. Here's which one fits your situation:
Torn or Slack Mesh on an Intact Frame
Replace just the mesh. It's the cheaper repair, about $150 less than our complete back, and you keep the Herman Miller Aeron backrest frame your chair came with.
The Back Frame Itself Has Cracked
Skip the mesh. New mesh needs a solid frame to pull against, so the fix here is a complete replacement back: our Aeron Remastered back frame with new mesh. If your chair has PostureFit SL, read that page's note on lumbar setup before ordering.
A Used Back From Another Chair
It saves you the stretching, but its mesh is used as well, so check the mesh's condition and tension before you buy.
Why Do a Herman Miller Aeron Back Mesh Replacement Instead of Buying New?
In short, a durable new back mesh gives your Aeron Remastered its signature comfort and functionality back.
Keep the Office Chair You Already Know
Nobody should throw out an Aeron because the back tore: when the mesh goes, the frame, tilt and arms on a Remastered usually have plenty of life left. Swapping just the fabric is the smartest, most sustainable way to fix it. Your frame stays, every adjustment you've set stays, and the chair stays out of the landfill.
A Breathable Material, Not Foam Padding
There's no foam or upholstery on an Aeron's back, just mesh. Its open suspension design manages heat and moisture buildup, since air goes right through. Fit a new one and you get back the steady support and consistent airflow you rely on for all-day comfort. It's made to maintain its tension and shape with daily use, too.
Support That Spreads Your Weight Again
We call it ergonomic restoration. The replacement is precision-fit, so the responsive suspension of your Aeron Remastered comes back, along with the factory-tight tension and breathable suspension you need for long work days. Lean back and your weight is pushed into the mesh; a tight mesh lets the Aeron's suspension system spread it across your back, which means fewer pressure points through long sitting sessions. Slack mesh can't.

Back Mesh for the Aeron Remastered: Your Questions
Do I need to replace the full back frame or only the mesh?
Only the mesh, as long as the plastic frame is still whole. That way you spend about $150 less than on our complete back frame with new mesh.
Do I need tools to install the Aeron Remastered back mesh?
Yes, two: a power drill and a screwdriver. The screwdriver takes the frame screws out and puts them back; the drill is for the holes.
Why does the replacement mesh not come with pre-drilled holes?
Because of tension. Factory-tight tension only happens when the mesh is stretched onto your own frame, and holes drilled in advance would likely leave it loose and saggy. So you drill each hole as you go.
Can I install the Aeron V2 back mesh myself?
Yes. With the video and a helper to hold the tension, it's a job you can do at home. The stretch is the part that takes effort, so plan for it.
What should I do if my Aeron back frame is cracked?
Don't fit new mesh to it: the mesh pulls hard on the frame, and a cracked frame can't hold that tension. Replace the whole back with our Remastered back frame with new mesh, which arrives with the mesh already on.
Should I check with Herman Miller first?
Yes. We always advise checking whether your chair is still under Herman Miller's warranty. Warranties are non-transferable, though, so if you bought your Aeron used or refurbished, our replacement mesh is the perfect solution.
Will this back mesh fit a Classic Aeron?
No. The mesh panels on the Aeron Classic and the Aeron Remastered are different, and this one is made for the Remastered (V2) only. For a Classic Aeron (V1), order our Aeron Classic back mesh.
How do I line up the mesh so it sits straight?
Middle first. Anchor the center notch at the top of the frame, then the bottom, and get the middle screws in. Only then pull the sides tight, working your way out; that keeps the mesh centered.
Are screws included?
No. You get the mesh by itself, with no back frame and no hardware, and the screws from your old mesh go back in.
Is it genuine 8Z Pellicle mesh?
No. 8Z Pellicle is the name Herman Miller gives the zoned mesh on the Remastered, and this is an aftermarket replacement for it. OfficeLogixShop engineered it to match the specific tension and weave of the Remastered back, so you get the same breathable, pressure-relieving support as the original.
Does it fit the Aeron Remastered stool?
Yes. This back mesh fits the Aeron Remastered drafting stool as well as the chair.
