How To Unbox and Assemble The Steelcase Leap V2 Chair

Welcome to this Steelcase Leap V2 unboxing and installation guide. In this tutorial, we will walk you through every step of setting up your Leap V2 chair quickly and easily. Let's get started.

Unboxing Your Leap V2 Chair

What is in the Box

  • Base of the chair
  • Seat and back assembly
  • Small box containing the gas cylinder and casters

Note: Please hold on to the box and packaging until your return period is over. If you decide to return the chair, you must use the original box and pack it the same way you received it.

Step 1: Installing the Casters

Flipping the Base

Turn the base upside down to prepare for caster installation.

Attaching the Casters

Take the five casters out of the small box. Click each caster firmly into the slots on the base.

Flipping the Base Upright

Once all five casters are installed, flip the base back to its upright position.

Step 2: Identifying Your Cylinder

Your chair will come with one of three types of cylinders. To identify yours, check the top:

Side Activated Cylinder

This cylinder features a unique metal plate on its side.

Hydraulic Cylinder

This cylinder features a unique cone shape at the top.

Top Activated Cylinder

This cylinder features a button on top.

Step 3: Cylinder Installation and Critical Testing

Warning: Please do not install the seat before you have thoroughly tested the height function. Confirming the mechanism works now will save you the trouble of disassembly later.

Side Activated Cylinder Setup

  • Place the cylinder into the base.
  • Look inside the seat mechanism to find the internal metal plate. This moves when you pull the height adjustment lever.
  • Insert the cylinder into the mechanism. The metal side plate on the cylinder must face the metal plate inside the chair mechanism.
  • Both plates must be at exactly the same level or the chair will not function properly.
  • Test the height lever. If the chair responds, proceed. If not, remove the cylinder, double-check that the metal plates are correctly aligned, and try again.

Hydraulic Cylinder Setup

  • Insert the cylinder into the base.
  • Place the assembly on top of it, ensuring the cylinder is securely seated inside the mechanism.
  • Test the height lever. If the chair responds, the installation was successful. If it does not, remove the cylinder to double-check the positioning and try again.

Top Activated Cylinder Setup

  • Insert the cylinder into the base.
  • Place the seat assembly on top of the cylinder.
  • If the seat rises or sinks automatically when you sit down, it means the cylinder is over-activated and needs recalibration.

Step 4: Attaching the Seat and Brackets

Checking the Plastic Brackets

  • The plastic brackets come already installed and secured with tape. Remove the tape gently.
  • If the brackets have fallen down, insert them on the sides of the chair.
  • Make sure the straight part is on the top and the angled one is on the bottom, then clamp them on.

Final Seat Assembly

  • Slide the seat onto the rails while making sure it is correctly aligned.

If Recalibration Is Needed

Identifying Overactivation

Although each chair is calibrated before shipping, differences in user weights can occasionally affect the height function. This is usually fixed with a one-time calibration.

Adjusting the Pin

  • Inside the seat mechanism, you will find an adjustment pin.
  • Using a 3mm or 7/64” Allen wrench, you will need to either tighten or loosen this pin to find the perfect balance.
  • Move in half-turns only. After each half-turn, test the chair to see how it responds.
  • Continue making these small adjustments until the chair remains stable, only moving when actively using the height lever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my side activated cylinder work?

This is usually an alignment issue. The metal plate on the cylinder must exactly face the metal plate inside the chair mechanism, and both must be at the same level.

Can I return the chair without the original box?

No. If you decide to return the chair, you must use the original box and pack it the same way you received it.

Which way do the seat brackets face?

The straight part of the plastic bracket should be on the top, and the angled part should be on the bottom.
