How To Unbox and Assemble The Herman Miller Aeron Classic With PostureFit

You have just received your Herman Miller Aeron Classic with PostureFit from OfficeLogixShop! This guide will walk you through the full assembly process, including the specific steps for both PostureFit cable models.

Step 1: Unboxing and Preparation

  • Empty the box: Remove the seat assembly, backrest, star base, and the parts box containing the cylinder and casters.
  • Keep the packaging: Save the box and all wrapping until your return window ends. Any potential return must be shipped back in this original packaging.
  • Prep the backrest: Remove the four pre-installed screws from the backrest and set them aside. You will need these for Step 3.

Step 2: Base and Cylinder Assembly

  • Install Casters: Flip the star base upside down and push the casters firmly into the sockets.
  • Insert Cylinder: Flip the base over and drop the cylinder into the center hole.
  • Attach Seat: Flip the seat assembly over. Insert the cylinder firmly into the mechanism. If the mechanism cover has opened, simply click it back into place.

Step 3: The Backrest (The Diagonal Bolt Trick)

Alignment is key for the PostureFit version. Follow this specific order to make the process easy:

  • Position: Place the backrest onto the chair frame so the holes align with the arm assembly.
  • The First Bolt: Insert one bolt into a corner (for example, top left) and tighten it halfway.
  • The Diagonal Move: Move to the opposite diagonal corner (for example, bottom right). Align the holes and insert the second bolt.
  • Tighten to Align: As you tighten these two diagonal bolts, the metal yokes will pull closer together, making it much easier to insert the remaining two bolts.
  • Finish: Install and tighten all four bolts completely.

Step 4: Size Identification and Troubleshooting

If the backrest does not fit correctly, check these two things:

  • Verify Size: Feel under the top upper lip of the backrest frame for Braille dots. One Dot is Size A (Small). Two Dots is Size B (Medium). Three Dots is Size C (Large).
  • Fix the Yoke Gap: If there is a visible gap between the metal yoke and the plastic bushing, they need to be pushed together. Use your hands or a rubber mallet to gently tap them back into place.

Step 5: Cylinder Calibration (The Half-Turn Rule)

If your chair sinks or rises on its own, follow these steps:

  • Open the Cover: Strike the bottom of the mechanism cover firmly to pop it open.
  • Adjust the Pin: Use an Allen wrench on the internal set pin.
  • The Rule: Only adjust in half-turn increments. Test the height function after every single half-turn to find the correct balance.

Step 6: PostureFit Installation

Depending on your order, you will have either the A-clip or B-clip model. Identify yours and follow the steps below:

Model A Installation

  • Cable Setup: Insert the PostureFit cable into the box and remove the middle screw located directly beneath it.
  • Mesh Opening: Create a small opening in the back mesh right above that middle screw and slide the cable through.
  • Mounting: Mount the bracket in the middle and tighten it.
  • Securing: Extend the cable and insert it into the PostureFit. Secure the unit by pushing it up on the rail and then sliding it down. Tighten all screws.

Model B Installation

  • Cable Preparation: Turn the knob until the cable extends to its maximum length.
  • Mesh Opening: At the bottom of the back mesh, right in the middle, make a small opening and slide the cable through.
  • Bracket Placement: Center the bracket on the frame and push it upward until it hooks securely.
  • Final Secure: Insert the cable into the PostureFit. Secure the unit by pushing it up on the rail and sliding it down. Tighten all screws to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know which PostureFit model I have?

Model A uses a middle screw for mounting, while Model B features a bracket that hooks directly onto the frame after extending the cable to its maximum length.

Why is my chair sinking?

This is usually due to the internal pin needing a half-turn adjustment with an Allen wrench. This is a normal calibration step for Aeron chairs to account for user weight.

What tools are required?

  • Screwdriver: A Phillips head is required for the backrest and PostureFit screws.
  • Allen Wrench: This is used for cylinder calibration.
  • Rubber Mallet: This is optional for seating the bushings if you face alignment issues.
